Welcome to Awesome Wednesday! This is where I’ll […]

Welcome to Awesome Wednesday!

This is where I’ll share a few cool, awesome things that I’m currently into. So…. occasionally on Wednesdays (although this week is a day early to kick things off), I’ll post a blog about a couple of awesome things I’ve been doing, reading, playing, watching, or a cool thing to share with you guys. This week I’ve got 2 very cool things!

What I’m Playing

I’ve been a Mac user for over ten years now, but I recently needed a Windows computer to run dictation software for my writing (it’s less of a headache on Windows). Thanks to that, I’ve discovered the awesome and vast world of PC gaming and WOW! I’ve been a die hard console gamer my whole life (I won’t say how long, but let’s just say I grew up with the Atari 2600!). It’s not that I’ve purposely avoided PC gaming–I just never had a computer powerful enough to run any of the AAA games in all their high def glory… until now. I just finished Doom (2016) and hated to see it come to an end. We need a sequel to that STAT!

But one really great thing about getting into PC gaming now is the vast catalog of past games I may have skipped–not to mention all the mods available. I love going back and reliving the old Dooms and Quakes–games that I only briefly dabbled with years ago.

One such game from a few years ago that I’ve been playing is Crysis 2. I’ve never been one to demand the best graphics–I’d much prefer solid gameplay over better graphics–but I admit I’ve had to wipe up the drool from my keyboard while playing Crysis 2. The lighting and particle effects in that game are… breathtaking.

Just look at that water. Oh my. No one takes down Liberty and gets away with it!

How a game that’s six years old still looks like it was released last month is mind boggling. Thankfully, it plays awesome, too! I’m digging the sci-fi, nano-tech filled story. For anyone who hasn’t played it, it’s like taking the single player gameplay of Call of Duty and infusing it with nano technology and tossing in a little Predator for flavor. I can’t wait to play parts 1 and 3!

For the techies: I’m running Crysis 2 on a Asus ROG laptop with a nVidia GeForce GTX 1070, 16GB RAM, i7-6700HQ, all Ultra settings, and 1080p.

What I’m Watching

Bring on season 2!

Have you seen the newest trailer for Stranger Things Season 2? If not, stop reading and go watch it! Don’t worry, I’ll wait. I’d go play a round of Crysis, but the trailer is only 37 seconds long, so I’ll sit here pondering the juicy goodies it teases.

You’re back? Was that awesome, or what? Did you see the tentacles? Think there may be a touch of Lovecraftian monsters in season two? Oh, I hope so! I know where I’ll be this Halloween!

That’s it for this week! Let me know what you think about any of the cool stuff I mentioned, or leave a comment and share a cool thing you’re into! I’ve gotta run… gotta save the eastern seaboard from an alien invasion!

From Death Claws to Floating Gold Orbs

Welcome to my list of favorite video games of 2015! You’ll notice I used the PS4 covers for the games (were applicable), that’s because that is the console in which I played the game.

1. Fallout 4
Honestly, does this game need any explanation? If you love Fallout, then you know why I love it so much. When Fallout 4 was announced at E3 2015, I just knew – I had a feeling – that we’d get it the same year. You’d better believe I was stoked when it was made official! I got my Pip Boy Edition pre-order in the day it went on sale.

I could list many reasons why I love the Fallout series so much, from its rich story history and its wacky characters to the varied missions (have you played U.S.S. Constitution mission? OMG that was hilarious!) and the little details I find in the huge wide open world. But my biggest reason for loving it so much? The total immersion factor. No game, other than one (keep reading), has the power over me to zap me into its world and not let go until many hours later like Fallout does. Seriously, it’s like being in a casino with no windows or clocks – when I’m wandering the Wastelands, nothing else matters. That escape is why Fallout – and specifically, Fallout 3 – is my favorite game series of ALL TIME. (For the record, The Elder Scrolls series is a close second, and it, too, has that same escape magic hold over me. More on Elder scrolls in a minute.)

And I get that many fans feel like Fallout 4 is just more of the same. Duh! I mean, I’m personally very happy they didn’t stray too far from what we love. Were the side missions as cool and lengthy as they were in Fallout 3? No, but I still feel like we got a full experience. Wandering around and discovering this little nods and references were also fun. Personally? I can’t wait for the DLC! Bring. It. On!

Interesting tidbit – I earned the Platinum trophy in 150+ hours *and* by some miracle published my third book during that time.

Some things I hope we get in the DLC:
1. More of the Glowing Sea. Such a fascinating place and very much reminiscent of the look and feel of Fallout 3. There were several little things to find in the Glowing Sea that just begged for more exploration – the half buried Super Duper Mart, the underground bunker – they just called out to me.

2. Underwater. You’ve seen the pipeline, right? Who knows? Maybe there’s a secret cover up story that goes along with it!

3. Salem area. Meeting Barney Rook and helping him out was nice, but while walking around the little town, I couldn’t help but wish there had been more to do there.

On with the rest!

2. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D – Absolutely beautiful on the 3DS. I never finished Majora’s Mask on N64 (I know, I am ashamed), but I really dug the heck out of this one.

3. Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture – Not without its issues, but I still really enjoyed wandering around (there’s that phrase again) and learning about these people’s lives.

4. Until Dawn – A surprise that was a blast to play! It felt like I was not just watching a movie, but was right there with the characters. And it was so easy to get immersed in each character and their stories.

5. The Elder Scrolls Online – Oh, Elder Scrolls. I’m torn. I loved being back in Tamriel, with just one caveat. I don’t need other players in my Elder Scrolls game. I am enjoying the familiar world and the missions, but I’m a soloist at heart. Just give me Elder Scrolls 6.

Honorable Mentions (sort of):

You may be wondering why The Witcher III isn’t on my list. And I have an answer. I did play a few hours of it, but it honestly didn’t grab me. I make no apologies for the fact that my love for Fallout, the immersion I feel when playing it and its play mechanics, has me spoiled. Other open-world RPGs just don’t compare. One day I’ll give it another chance. I liked it, I just didn’t love it.

Normally, a Tales game (like Tales of Zestiria) would make my list, but due to it coming out right before Fallout 4, I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t even broken the seal yet. But since I’ve now Platinum’d Fallout 4, I’ll be diving in soon!

Well, I hope you enjoyed my list of favorite games of 2015. I’ll try to report in throughout the new year whenever a new game tickles my fancy. In the meantime, press start…

In no particular order, here are some of my favorite books of 2015!

I mostly read non-fiction, whether it’s to gain knowledge about a particular subject (like indie publishing or photography), or just to learn about other geeks out there like me.

Non-Fiction

5000 Words Per Hour – Chris Fox

This book, along with Monica Leonelle’s “The 8 Minute Writing Habit”, has changed my writing routine for the better. I admit, I’m a total pantser, but I wanted to see if this book could still help me. And it does! While I’m no where near writing 5,000 words per hour, this book has been helpful in two ways. 1.) I’m writing every single day again, which is awesome! Some days I may only manage 250 words in my work-in-progress, but my personal goal has been to form a daily habit of writing at least 250 words. The good news leads me to… 2.) Most days I double and triple my daily goal! Again 500-750 words may not be huge numbers, but in time they will add up. I encourage any writer struggling with Butt In Chair Time each day to read this book. Do the sprints. Even short sprints add up.

The 8-Minute Writing Habit – Monica Leonelle

(See above for some of why I LOVE this book! Seriously, just like the title suggests, it helped change my writing habits.) “The 8-Minute Writing Habit” basically inspires you to write – at a minimum – for 8 minutes a day. Who doesn’t have 8 minutes to spare? The great thing about this mini-Pomodoro method is that once you get through those first 8 minutes, you’re usually in the flow of things and don’t want to stop. So, get this book, and learn how to turn an 8 minute habit into productive writing!

Writing Into the Dark – Dean Wesley Smith

I follow Smith’s daily blog (formally called “Writing in Public”) religiously. Really, the man needs no introduction. He writes every day and shares his word totals with with the world. Very inspiring stuff! His career spans four decades and has written both traditionally and self-published, as well as for his own publishing company, WMG Publishing. “Writing Into the Dark” is about learning to follow our Creative Voice whenever we put our Butt in Chair to write and to ignore our Critical Voice. You know, the one that likes to tell us “that story isn’t good”, or “you’ll never amount to anything writing like that.” Following Creative Voice and tuning out Critical Voice is no easy feat, but this book will help any author develop that skill. Personally, I’m a total pantser, and I loved this book even more because it was like talking with an old friend who shared my writing style. Not that I needed the validation. Outlining just isn’t for me, and it’s nice to know I’m not alone.

I loved this book so much I just bought and read her follow-up: the Prosperity For Writers Productivity Journal. This book helped cement the belief that I can succeed as a writer. This will be one of those books that I turn to time and time again.

It’ll make you laugh, cry, and make you fall in love with gaming all over again (not that anyone would fall out of love with gaming). Highly recommended even if you aren’t familiar with Day. If you’re a fellow geek, you’ll enjoy it.

This book inspired my first daily photo challenge from April 2015. While I do enjoy shooting with my Canon 70D, my iPhone is my favorite camera. Why? Because I always have it with me. And I’ve captured more memories and beautiful shots than I ever could have planned to do.

Not only is the story of this 67 year old lady’s thru hike on the AT a fascinating one, it’s also a nice history lesson. A lot has happened in our modern world just since the 1950s (interstates were built, cars were manufactured, etc), which really puts things into perspective. If you’re a hiker or enjoy the outdoors (and living off the grid), give this one a read.

Fiction

As you can see, my non-fiction list far outweighs my fiction lists. This is pretty typical. I’d like to up the number of fiction books I read in 2016.

Goosebumps are just plain fun. And “The Haunted Mask” is just plain creepy. What more could a Monster Kid like me want? I got on a Goosebumps kick later in the year thanks to my nephew (the same one who inspired my book, “Zombie Boy: Press Start“), and the ones listed above were some of my favorites.

Tis the season for top 10 lists! What’s great abo […]

Tis the season for top 10 lists! What’s great about them is that they expose us to gems we may have missed. Rarely do I meet someone who agrees with my tastes 100% of the time, but I enjoy reading why people liked the movies they did, and if it grabs my interest I’ll check it out. There are still several movies I wanted to see that I haven’t, but I had to cut it off somewhere. I’m sure I’ll tweet about them as I see ‘em.

One thing to know about my tastes is that despite my indie horror filmmaking background, I was raised on Spielberg and make no apologizes for it. So when a big budget studio picture comes along and wins my affection, of course it’s going on my list. Another thing to know about me is that I’m a huge horror fan, and horror takes up at least 85% of everything I watch. Sci-Fi and Action/Adventure take up the rest with a small dose of drama and TV to fill in the gaps.

This year has been an interesting one for horror. Horror on VOD/DVD won the battle against theater releases this year. I saw MANY more good horror movies from the comfort of my recliner, on my big TV, and eating my own yummy homemade popcorn than previous years. What’s even more interesting is that my top 10 favorites of 2014 contain more non-horror than I expected. Science-fiction/action movies really upped their game this year with big theatrical releases. I may be in the minority, but horror lost out to the more sci-fi fare of Godzilla and Guardians of the Galaxy. 2015 looks to be similar what with Jurassic World, Star Wars and the like coming out. As much as I love indie horror, I do miss those really great big horror releases of yesteryear. With that out of the way, here are my favorite movies of 2014!

1. Godzilla – I love this movie more every time I watch it. Bare with me. This mini-review will be as huge as Big G himself. There’s been a lot of hating on Godzilla lately. I get it. Not everyone is into the Big G. I’m not into torture porn or sparkly vampires. Most of the complaints have been centered around the fact that we don’t get 120 minutes of nothing but Godzilla. Don’t get me wrong, I would love that too, but there is such a thing as build up and suspense. Remember when we were kids and we had to *wait* for that coveted toy rather than get it immediately? When we had to wait for it, wasn’t it that much more exciting?

Part of the problem with the lack of suspense these days is that the current generation of movie goers are used to getting everything within a few seconds and with only a few screen taps. I’m guilty of this, too. Having things more accessible is cool. We can pull up a movie on our phones and start watching it within seconds. But I do wonder if the desire for instant gratification isn’t killing suspense in movies.

Monster fans whining about not getting more monster fighting in Godzilla had their chance to see just that in Summer 2013. It was called Pacific Rim, and yet no one went to see it. I highly recommend it, especially if you love big robots and giant aliens!

The problem with hating on Godzilla is that it shows we’re a society of instant gratification junkies. When studios read complaints about not enough of the good stuff, eventually that’s all we’ll get. The irony is then the good stuff won’t be the good stuff anymore. It’ll be the norm. Rinse. Repeat.

Regarding suspense, movies like Jaws and Jurassic Park did it right. They employed the “less is more” idea and used it to perfection. We don’t get the T-Rex in Jurassic Park until 45 minutes into the movie. And it was worth every minute of the wait. Ever hear anyone complain about that scene not delivering? Me neither.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy – Guardians is like Star Wars for the current generation. Everything about it is awesome. Guardians screams for future movies where we get to not only explore these characters more, but the beautiful worlds. I want to visit every world again and have whole movies dedicated to them. The richness is there. Let me also say that with few exceptions (Spider-Man and X-Men) I have never been a big fan of the Marvel superhero movies. It seems like ever since 9/11 we have had this insatiable need to be saved by a super-human being with magical powers. I miss the every man hero and the anti-hero. However, Guardians really turned that superhero mythos on its head and I’m totally happy it did. (The awesome James Gunn played a big part in that, as his style oozes into every scene.) I’m still waiting on a truly epic and awesome Ghost Rider franchise. Come on, Marvel, give an old comic book geek a bone, will ya?

3. Late Phases – We haven’t had a truly great werewolf movie since the 80s. Dog Soldiers and Ginger Snaps have come close, offering different spins on the tried and true legend. Speaking of the 80s, Late Phases really shows its appreciation for another great lycan movie that came before it – Silver Bullet. Affectionate nods are scattered throughout this excellent movie. Do not let this one get away. Top notch acting, creatures, and suspenseful scenes that are truly terrifying really set this one apart from the pack. (See what I did there?)

4. Exists – Here’s another tidbit about me. I absolutely abhor found footage movies and cannot wait until that fad is over. However, I absolutely loved Exists. But here’s the the thing. Just because found footage appears to be easier to make for indie filmmakers, it’s not. Found footage still requires focus (both narratively and literally, heh) and a good sense of how to tell a story. Exists was also directed by a found footage veteran director. Do I wish Exists had been shot with the more traditional narrative style of using a tripod? Absolutely. But I can’t deny its effectiveness as a well-made, suspenseful movie. My dvd is already pre-ordered.

5. Edge of Tomorrow – Here’s a gem of a movie that suffered from poor marketing. I disagree that the title was part of the problem. The title makes perfect sense once it’s clear what the premise is (which should have taken 10 seconds). That’s why I think the marketing failed. However, if you saw this one, you’re likely to agree that it’s a solid sci-if action movie, and if you haven’t, give it a chance.

6. X-Men: Days of Future Past – I really dig the X-Men movies. I never read the comic (I was into Ghost Rider instead), but was immediately drawn to these characters with the very first X-Men movie. All the subsequent sequels are also solid movies that can stand on their own, because this series doesn’t suffer from an overly emotional setup. Yet at the same time, fans get those emotional moments throughout the series. By comparison, I absolutely love the original Spider-Man thanks to its necessary, fun setup, and I miss that in its sequels. I enjoyed Days of Future Past despite two minor complaints. One is the under use of all the familiar characters from past movies. There’s no character development; they’re just there. It’s nice to see them, but it would’ve been even nicer to have gotten a little more. Especially with Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page’s character). She has an important job, and from what I understand, it’s even more important in the comic, yet there isn’t any development there. And two, I felt it could have used a bit more insight into Magneto’s younger-self. I only say that because I find good villains fascinating. After all, they are the heroes of their own stories. All that said, I’m curious what direction they will take the story after how this one ended. The main thing I enjoyed about Days of Future Past is how well connected it is to the rest of the series (including the Wolverine spin offs).

Ragnarok is not only a beautiful and well told monster movie, but the best part is the modern-day filmmakers know how to use a tripod. That’s code for it’s NOT found footage. Netflix is currently streaming this and kudos to them for streaming this with subtitles. Think Indiana Jones with giant creatures and you have an idea what to expect.

There’s a lot of social commentary here that doesn’t come off as preachy. And it goes without saying, but the animations are ah-ma-zing!

However, I do think it was a good movie – if I look at it as a dramatic piece and not a horror movie. Essie Davis did an amazing job and there’s nothing that can argue that. The cinematography was great, too. And yes, the kid was annoying, but he needed to be. That said, I really wish it was the horror movie everyone made it out to be – and the one I imagined in my head – because the Babadook character could have been so creepy and cool. Still, it makes my top 10 list because it is a solid movie – albeit very horror-lite. I’m looking forward to giving this one another viewing once it gets Blu-ray distribution.

(Give me monsters or ghosts any day!) However, Cheap Thrills really touched on something interesting. Who’s to say the, quote, bad guy, is really the bad guy? The commentary on social status and how far humans will go really blurs those lines. Solid movie.

Honorable mentions: Alien Abduction, The Taking of Deborah Logan, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, Stage Fright, Blood Glacier, and Horns. I saw Horns after I had made this list, and it could have totally been in my top 10, but I couldn’t decide what to demote. See it for sure.

Who knew Leatherface was a poet?

When I discovered the book, “Chain Saw Confidential“, I had no idea Gunnar Hansen (Mr. Leatherface himself) was also a writer. Hansen brings a professional yet conversational style to the accounts (both his own and those of actors and crew) of the “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” production.

I really dug this book. There were a few things about the making of the movie that I did not know – little tidbits of info for any aspiring filmmaker – that were quite enlightening. Some of the most interesting stories involved the late Marilyn Burns (aka Sally) and what she went through all in the name of movie making. Hansen describes the rough shooting conditions with an almost nostalgic voice. It’s clear he remembers his part in “Massacre” history fondly. While “Massacre” isn’t my favorite horror film, it definitely leaves a lasting impression with its raw style. If you’re even remotely interested in the movie itself or low budget filmmaking, this is a fun, enjoyable read.

While you’re at it, be sure to check out the all-new 4k transfer for the 40th anniversary of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” on Blu-ray. I haven’t seen it yet, but I hear it’s gorgeous.

(Note: You’ll notice I did something a little different this week. I plan to start sharing little mini-reviews of things I like such as books, movies, games, etc. Enjoy!)

What does Halloween mean to me? To a horror fan or Mons […]

What does Halloween mean to me?

To a horror fan or Monster Kid, Halloween isn’t just a day at the end of October; it’s a month long celebration of our year round love affair with all things spooky. While I enjoy horror movies every day of the year, I ramp it up during October, and I also throw in visits to local haunted attractions and parties with friends.

Halloween got its start as a Celtic holiday when people celebrated their deceased loved ones at harvest, and would dress up in monster costumes to walk among the dead and not scare them away. While I don’t celebrate the holiday in the same fashion, I do appreciate its history. Halloween is a time for fun, and I enjoy keeping the Monster Kid in me alive by dressing up in my favorite monster costume and celebrating with friends and family.

What does Halloween mean to you?

Don’t forget: Today is also the last day to buy “Monster Girl” on sale – it returns to full price tomorrow, November 1st.

Earlier, I posted a list of 31 horror movies as suggestions for what to watch to get into the Halloween spirit. I didn’t get to nearly as many scary movies as I wanted to, but I did a see one new one that I LOVED – “Exists“, directed by Eduardo Sanchez (co-creator of “The Blair Witch Project”). It’s a found footage horror movie, which I’m not a big fan of, but it was well made and very INTENSE!

What did you watch this scary season?

Friday the 13th on the Night of a Full Moon (Note: This […]

Friday the 13th on the Night of a Full Moon

(Note: This is an old post from my former blog, and in honor of the Lunar eclipse and Halloween, I thought it was appropriate to repost it here.)

Today is Friday, June the 13th. We’re also supposed to have a full moon tonight. (Oh, and something about solar flares hitting the earth! OMG run!) Since there aren’t any cool theatres around me playing Jason or werewolf marathons tonight, I’ll have my own. While thinking about that, I decided to rank my five favorite “Friday the 13th” movies and my five favorite werewolf movies.

Friday the 13th Top 5

1. Part II – I’m pretty sure this was the first Friday movie I saw. I remember ‘burlap sack Jason’ very clearly. Once I saw the original, Part I, the opening suddenly made a lot more sense.

2. Part I – I’m a big fan of this one, despite there being no Jason killer. Mrs. Voorhees made a fantastic killer and still creeps me out. And the killer coda at the end is classic horror movie stuff.

3. Part IV: The Final Chapter – I really like this sequel a lot. I thought the character of Tommy Jarvis (Corey Feldman) was cool. He was a makeup and FX wiz kid who took on Jason in the end.

4. Part VI: Jason Lives – This one was always fun to me. And it’s the first time in the series that Jason is resurrected (via lightening).

5. Part V: A New Beginning – Despite not having – spoiler! – the real Jason present, only his persona, it’s a decent movie and sequel.

Werewolf Movies Top 5

1. The Howling – Joe Dante can do no wrong in my eyes. It’s a shame we aren’t still getting a steady supply of creature features from him today. Most people prefer that “other” werewolf movie that came out at the same time. And they are both different enough to stand apart, but I’ve always preferred the dark humor of The Howling.

2. The Wolf Man – I love this movie. It’s atmospheric and short. It’s not as fancy as all the newer, FX heavy iterations but it’s a fun time if you’re into the traditional lycan lore.

3. Silver Bullet – Based on Stephen King’s book, “Cycle of the Werewolf”. This one is a lot of fun and has some intense moments that will have you gripping the seat of your wheelchair.

4. Ginger Snaps – This movie is a unique twist on the lycan curse being that it’s a metaphor for female puberty. It’s dark and twisted and a lot of fun.

5. Underworld – I absolutely love this movie and its first sequel, Evolution. It gets bashed because of its use of CGI, but its style and atmosphere always keep me entertained. That, and I want to be Selene.

So there you have it! Probably not the most traditional list for these two categories, but who ever said I was traditional? Be sure to grab some popcorn and settle in tonight for a rip roarin’ good time! (And watch out for those fireballs falling from the sky…)

Welcome to October – aka Halloween month! Since H […]

Welcome to October – aka Halloween month!

Since Halloween is both my favorite holiday and Viki’s (from “Monster Girl“), I thought we’d have some fun. To celebrate the holiday, I love to watch 31 horror/Halloween movies during the month of October. I watch horror movies year round, but I really ramp it up during this month. This year I thought I would offer my own Halloween viewing schedule for your enjoyment. You’ve probably seen your friends doing those “31 movies in 31 nights” challenges, and this is basically my list of some of the best movies to watch during Halloween. You can also follow me on Instagram @valmakesmovies to see daily posts of what I watched!

We start out with something light in “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” to really set the tone for the season ahead. Think you can hang with all 31? Remember: When you call it a night, be sure to check under the bed and in the closet, for you never know what might be waiting in the shadows. Muahahahahaha!

[Note: Not all of these are kid-friendly, so please be advised.]
